We may occupy a place for years without truly feeling part of it. In the same way, some brief encounters create an intimacy that is hard to explain. Belonging is not only proximity: it is an experience of recognition.

Belonging asks for connection and autonomy. When we need to hide essential parts of ourselves to remain, there may be adaptation, but not necessarily belonging. The question shifts from only ‘where do I fit?’ to ‘how can I be here truthfully?’

This experience is built through the body, memory and choice. It involves the home we create, the relationships we nurture, the work we do and the futures we are able to imagine.

Perhaps belonging means sustaining a living relationship between inner and outer worlds: recognizing where we come from, listening to what the present asks and helping shape the places we wish to inhabit.
